Kitchens are Transitioning Into Functional Multipurpose Rooms

I just read an interesting article by Ren Miller of Design NJ Magazine.  The article talks about all different aspects of kitchen design that are evolving. The American family is also evolving into a much busier and multi-tasking entity so the design industry is forced to make changes to follow suit.  I never realized how the American family has evolved and the way we live is changing to accommodate the need for multitasking, quick meals, and centralized work stations.  In the past I have written about the fact Americans are moving to a more transitional and contemporary design style. The article I recently read just confirms the transition from Traditional to transitional and contemporary.

At Amiano & Son Construction we have seen the color scheme in kitchens change dramatically. No one would have ever dreamed of a gray kitchen in days gone by, now it is the new white.  In the past year we have designed and built 3 gray kitchens. WinDelahunt Homes - Custom Home Buildere refrigerators, bottle racks, and wine glass racks are also becoming a huge trend in kitchen remodels.  We are putting wine fridges of all kinds into kitchens. Technical wine fridges with varying settings for humidity, wine types white vs. red, and even cool lighting effects.  Consumers have a wide variety of wine fridges for their kitchen remodel that you can find in very narrow structure or a larger structure.

Man-made quartz counter-tops are another new rage in kitchen remodels.  The quartz products are available in hundreds of patterns, colors, and designs.  You can fake people out with a granite imitation quartz top, go for a marble look, or even get a unique designer look in bright red, blue, or even yellow.  These quartz products are easy to care for, stain resistant, heat resistant, and do not require a sealant application.

America is welcoming Europe into their kitchens ! European style appliances are growing in popularity with kitchen remodels. Appliances are also becoming more and more technology driven. Some appliance manufacturers are producing appliances that multitask the same as the consumer. For example newer ovens offer convection cooking, steam cooking, and even high speed cooking all in one appliance. There are also appliances that have internet capabilities so you can control them remotely from your phone or your PC.  These same appliances can check temps, order groceries, and turn on/off when you are away from home. Easy access to these appliances is another feature that some consumers are finding makes life easier. Wall ovens now offer left and right swing out as opposed to the typical pulling down.  French doors are not just for refrigerators anymore, ovens are taking on this new feature as well.

Delahunt Homes - Custom Home BuilderToday’s kitchen needs to work for the professional homeowner as well.  There was once a rumor that desk/computer areas in a kitchen were passe, not true. Workstations are making their way back into the American kitchen.  During our design process clients typically will ask 2 questions as an after thought. The first question is if there is anywhere to put a small area for a chair under a countertop to use as a desk space.  If the space is not available then the next question is if there is a space for a charging station, mail center, or family hub area.  We work with clients closely to find the best alternative for their needs and space.  Delahunt Homes - Custom Home Builder

I have written a lot about pullouts and rollouts in previous blogs.  Gone are the days when you have to strain your back to get a pot, small appliance or pan.  Today cabinets are at a whole new level. Cabinet lines such as Wellborn offer smooth functioning roll outs and pullouts. Rollouts and pullouts allow you, the homeowner more storage . You can put more into a cabinet without worrying about being able to reach it. The rollouts and pullouts make everything in easy reach. The variety of rollouts and pullouts keeps growing. There are even lazy susan pullouts which I wished I had to choose from when doing my kitchen.

The last thing I found very interesting, but not surprising, is the change coming about in kitchen tables. They are fading away or changing in their design popularity.  Homeowners are designing their kitchens with counter space seating more and more. We have seen this trend in our design center, even if a homeowner can only fit 2 chairs they still want that space designed for 2 counter seats.  Homeowners will also design areas for the more compact yet taller pub-style tables. These tables are convenient for quick snacks, breakfast, and a chat over a glass of wine. The pub-style tables allow you to perch rather than sit which gives you the sense you can get up & down while not committing to a formal sit-down.
